Maybe Babyshambles know this as well. The first thing you notice about EP is how far away it sounds from the rackety squall of Down in Albion. With less filler and some stronger songs it could have been a great fuck-you of a record, but as it was, there was definitely something amiss. Doherty's vocal sounds more at ease and less-pained here than on previous Babyshambles releases - so far, so good then. By the same token, it has to be said that the majority of this EP is instantly forgettable, so by the time 'Love You But You're Green' has finished plodding on like a drunken grandad at a funeral, followed by 'I Wish' and its comedy ska jollities more nauseating than exciting , the next few minutes are spent looking at your watch waiting for the CD to end.
Of course it doesn't, and 'Beg Steal Or Borrow' turns out to be one of the best songs Doherty has recorded under the Babyshambles mantle: it flows along like an insistant swan, chasing after the last morsel of crusty bread that a little kid has just thrown into the Thames.
After that, there's still one more to go, and 'Sedative' is exactly that - comatose and mournful, and best left alone unless insomnia comes biting.
All in all, this would have been an interesting single - two of the songs on it represent a surprisingly buoyant edge to this much-maligned outfit. On "I Wish", his happily miserable take on ska, Doherty moans, "I wish to God that I'd just been stabbed," accompanied by chipper horns and bright Jamaican upstrokes.
Fingers crossed for a Baby Cham collab. Babyshambles' shambolic frontman reportedly lives life to extremes, but his music too often plays it safe-- an intoxicated echo of past icons from a man still too moderately talented to flame out entirely.

The Blinding has moments of potential greatness or at least, very-good-ness that are squandered, and the EP's polished sound just ends up calling attention to the sloppiness of the music.
It also sounds strangely airless, particularly on "I Wish," an easygoing ska number that should be upbeat but comes off flatly. Indeed, most of the EP just doesn't have much of an impact: the title track comes charging in, then doesn't have much to say; "Love You But You're Green" is a would-be tender ballad that meanders past the moment; and "Beg, Steal or Borrow" is the kind of witty, bittersweet vignette that Doherty seems to be able to write in his sleep and in this case, might have been.
The Blinding is marginally better -- or at least, more listenable -- than Down in Albion , but it still feels like a waste of Doherty 's potential. AllMusic relies heavily on JavaScript. Please enable JavaScript in your browser to use the site fully. Blues Classical Country.
